It's Fire Prevention Week and Black Earth and Mazomanie Fire Departments brought out their trucks!
The elementary students heard about fire prevention, high-fived a fully dressed firefighter, went inside the fire trucks, and met Sparky! Sparky even had time for a picture next to the Vanguard emblem!
Thank you Black Earth and Mazomanie Fire Departments for taking time to educate our students on fire prevention and what to do in case of a fire. An even bigger THANK YOU for what you do every day to help keep us safe!
We are so grateful for our supportive #VanguardPride community!

In Ms. Frannie's 4k class we have been talking about apples. We tasted red, yellow and green apples and labeled the parts of an apple.
In this Directed Drawing project we practiced following directions, fine motor skills, and writing our name! Look how cute our Apples turned out!
Nice job #VanguardPride 4K-ers!

Ms.Spahn's 4th grade class is learning all about plants and animals in science class.
On Tuesday, students took part in an experiment where they tried to pick up different foods using a variety of tools. These tools symbolized a bird's beak.
Students learned that the shape of a bird's beak determines what it can eat. An animal's structure fits its function!

Another "new" staff member we're excited to introduce is Angie Baker-Anstice! Angie is a new Special Ed Educational Assistant for the Middle/High School.

Angie grew up in the River Valley area, and has always loved a smaller community. She has an associates degree from MATC. She has worked at Wisconsin Heights Elementary in some shape or form since 2016, from subbing to Early Childhood, and most recently 4K. She is also an ambassador for Plexus, a health & wellness company.

The next new staff member we'd like to introduce is our new 4th Grade teacher, Courtney Spahn!
"I am excited to begin my teaching career at Wisconsin Heights! This spring I graduated from Edgewood College with a degree in Elementary Education and ESL Education. I have always dreamed of being a teacher, and I can’t believe the time has finally come. Throughout college, I worked for my hometown’s recreation department where I taught a variety of different classes ranging from tee-ball to cooking.
I grew up in Middleton on my family’s dairy farm. We raised cows, chickens, and goats. It may seem silly, but each goat has its own name. My students will definitely see lots of pictures of them throughout the year.
In my free time, I enjoy being outside. Some of my favorite things to do outside include hiking and hammocking. I also enjoy spending time with my family and friends playing card and board games.
I am looking forward to an amazing first year!"
We're so glad to have you, Courtney!

It's time to welcome our new staff members for the 2023-24 school year!
First up is our Language Arts/Social Studies Intern, Alexis Hauser!
Alexis lives in Madison with her dog, Lady. They enjoy exploring the outdoors together and visiting family. Lady is always excited to sniff out a new adventure! Alexis will be graduating from UW-Whitewater this winter with her degree in Elementary Education with a minor in Special Education.
Alexis graduated from Madison East but grew up in a small town, and is excited to return to a close-knit community. Being in a small school allowed Alexis to be involved in many different activities, such as FFA, the drama club, and sports. She is excited to see her new middle schoolers find their own place in the school community!
Alexis has wanted to be a teacher for as long as she can remember, and is so excited to be teaching language arts! For the last year, she has also been a substitute teacher in various schools in Dane County.
Alexis enjoys reading, scrapbooking, sewing, and spending time with family and friends. You’ll never find her without a book!
Welcome to the #VanguardPride team, Alexis! We're glad to have you!

The fifth graders have so much energy at recess time and they make sure to include staff in all their fun!
And let's not forget the large frog that decided to join on the playground!

Mrs. Nimmow's class witnessed monarch caterpillars gorge themselves on milkweed and then several days later pupate into beautiful chrysalises.
After a couple of weeks, they saw several monarch butterflies emerge from those chrysalises and excitedly released them. Who knows, maybe there are some future lepidopterists (people who study butterflies and moths) in the group!

Personal Finance broke out of their Checking and Register Unit. Checks were stolen from them, and they had to break into lockboxes by balancing a checkbook to crack the codes. Once in the boxes, they found the name of thieves written in invisible ink. The thieves were Mrs. Brown and Mrs. Acker. The students then had to track them down to get a key to get into a mini-lock box stashed with sweet treats!
These Breakout Edu boxes were provided by the Wisconsin Heights Endowment Fund, which awarded $8,700 in mini-grants for innovative projects, this past spring. Mrs. Meinholz and her students are very thankful to the Endowment Committee for providing the grant for these boxes!

Happy Frogday....we mean Friday!
A very large frog joined our elementary students at recess today. Well, he is green ......

This might look like graffiti, but it's actually the Senior Post in the Wisconsin Heights Tech Ed shop!
A tradition that was inadvertently started by Mr. Stelzel when he signed one of the shop posts upon his retirement. Now seniors are allowed to do the same at some point during the last few weeks of their high school career.
