Tomorrow, October 16th, is Unity Day! Everyone is encouraged to wear orange. What is Unity Day? Unity Day was started by PACER’s National Bullying Prevention Center in October 2011. It is the lead campaign of National Bullying Prevention Month. Why the color orange? This color is described as warm and inviting. Also, it is commonly associated with safety, visibility, and protection. #VanguardPride

The WHHS Child Development class has been working with our 4K learners by supporting them in their classroom centers; putting together letter puzzles, learning about the letter of the week, and making apples. Both our littlest learners and our high school students love this collaboration. #VanguardPride 💚

Here are some more #VanguardPride 4th graders exploring different types of beaks and discovering what beak works best for each food item! It's all part of their unit on animal structure in science.

4th graders are learning about how the structure of beaks are built to fit their function. The kids tested it out by trying to pick up various items (rice, beans, noodles, and string) with different kinds of beaks (chopsticks, clothespin, spoon). They learned that a straight, long beak is not great for picking up ants! Some pretty cool learning going on in our schools! #VanguardPride

Our next #VanguardPride new staff shoutout is to our new Elementary School Special Education Educational Assistant, Morgan Turner! Morgan grew up in Middleton but now lives in Avoca. She has over 10 years of horse experience, some of which was helping to teach kids how to ride. She has also worked with toddlers in a childcare setting. She's an FFA alumni and an adult volunteer for the Wisconsin Heights Energizers 4-H Club. Morgan graduated from Wisconsin Heights in 2018 and is currently attending Southwest Wisconsin Technical College for an associate degree in Midwifery. She loves to crochet, bake, read, color, work with animals, garden, and play video games. She and her family also enjoy playing card games and board games. When asked what excites her most about coming to Wisconsin Heights she said "giving back to the community that helped me so much through my tough years to become the adult and mom I am today. I am also excited to be back in a learning environment where my mind can flourish and I can smile everyday!" She also shared this about herself: "I have a daughter (Laney Ohlin, 7) here at the district, a step-daughter (McKenzie Holmes, 15) that goes to Mt. Horeb, a pit bull named Stitch (she’s a rescue, and the best!) My fiancé, James Ambrose, is a great dad and is a helpful teaching resource. From farming and flying, to horses and drawing, to Japanese culture and Norwegian culture, we learn and help others grow!" Welcome back, Morgan! We're glad to have you on the team!
