October is National Dental Hygiene Month! 5 tips to make brushing and flossing fun! Let kids pick out their favorite soft bristle toothbrush. Popular toothbrush companies make brushes with medium and firm bristles, so read carefully to avoid those! Toothpaste comes in many fun colors and flavors. Check the ingredient list for fluoride, hydroxyapatite or both to ensure it's designed to harden tooth enamel. Using a toothbrush timer ensures they brush for 2 full minutes, plus timers come in many shapes, sizes, colors and some even have a suction cup on them. Floss picks come in a variety of colors, sizes, disposable, reusable, silicone, plastic and biodegradable. Kids love being independent so floss picks are the easy answer. There are many great books, videos and songs that make learning about teeth, toothbrushing, flossing and getting their teeth cleaned by a dental hygienist fun. Check online or your local library. Bridging Brighter Smiles provides preventive dental services to students inside the schools so there is no lost time from work or commuting for families. In the first Social Studies unit in 5th grade, students learn about Early Exploration and its effect on the world and societies. To wrap up our unit, students shared their learning by presenting a poster and speech at the annual 5th grade Wax Museum. Students chose an early explorer, conducted research about that person, and then designed a costume. Guests walked around and waved at the wax explorer to activate them. The explorer then did a little bio. So much fun and informative! #VanguardPride

7th grade math broke out of their rational operations unit! Students worked in groups to solve rational operations problems, and their answers became the codes to get into the breakout boxes. Once they got into the first box, they were surprised to find another locked box. This was the only box that had nothing to do with math - they were given a riddle to find their final key. Using their given riddles, students had to think creatively to find their final key. Some keys were hidden in a soap dispenser, under stools, in a bucket of pencils, and hanging on bulletin boards or posters. And, for all of their hard work, students were rewarded with sweet treats in their final locked boxes! Nice job #VanguardPride 7th graders!

If you have ever heard a teenager say, “That’s cap,” they are saying that’s a lie. #VanguardPride students in 7th grade math played a game called "That’s Cap" to review rational number operations. The students were shown pictures of problems already solved with work, and they had to decide if the problem was solved correctly. If it was, they held up a sign that said "That's Right!" and if the problem as wrong, they had to fix the problem and hold up a sign that said, "That's Cap!" Most of the problems were cap, and the students loved yelling, "That's Cap!"

7th grade math reviewed multiplying and dividing positive and negative numbers by speed dating. Every student was given a different multiplication or division problem involving positives and negatives that they had to solve. Students then had to trade their problem with another student and solve it within a minute. After a minute, students had to find a new partner to trade problems with. Students had to keep finding new partners until they had solved all of the problems. Another example of the creative ways our #VanguardPride teachers keep our students engaged!

It's Fire Prevention Week and Black Earth and Mazomanie Fire Departments brought out their trucks! The elementary students heard about fire prevention, high-fived a fully dressed firefighter, went inside the fire trucks, and met Sparky! Sparky even had time for a picture next to the Vanguard emblem! Thank you Black Earth and Mazomanie Fire Departments for taking time to educate our students on fire prevention and what to do in case of a fire. An even bigger THANK YOU for what you do every day to help keep us safe! We are so grateful for our supportive #VanguardPride community!
