Mrs. Johnson's #VanguardPride 6th Grade Science students dissected a lima bean seed. Students prepared their seeds the day before by soaking in water for 24 hours, made predictions, and drew pictures of what would be inside of the seed. The kids were able to use a toothpick to remove the seed coat and open the seed to discover the seed embryo. WHMS students continue to explore the world of life science!

This morning, #VanguardPride students at Wisconsin Heights Elementary school met with folks from Justice for a Cure and officers from the Dane County Sherriff's Office. As part of the World Cancer Day Ribbon/Card Project, kids throughout the school colored cancer ribbons to give to those who are currently battling cancer. The kids handed the ribbons to each police officer and got to talk to our visitors from JFAC.
The kids had fun making the ribbons, and we're honored to be able to brighten up the day of cancer fighters in our area! 🎗

Students in Mrs. Johnson's 6th grade Science class, spent the last day before break drawing pictures of their bread from the classroom Moldy Bread Lab.
Students were able to discuss what caused the bread to mold, how mold spores are created and spread, as well as conditions which caused the lab to take much longer than expected. 6th graders discussed how preservatives and temperature play a part in the speed in which bread molds.
#Vanguard Pride 6th Graders continue to develop their ability working on the CER (Claim, Evidence, Reasoning) strategy.

On March 7, WHES held Family Literacy Night. Author KW Penndorf was featured. Ms. Penndorf authored the books "Freya and the Dragon Egg" and Freya and the Battle at the Aal Thing." Students got to talk to Ms. Penndorf about being an author and were able to have her autograph their books.
Other activities that night included making your own bookmarks, Mystery Bag writing, finding the baby dragon eggs, making your own baby egg, and a read aloud.
#VanguardPride 7th grade math kicked off their upcoming geometry units by celebrating Pi Day on 3/14! The students were given a breakout box in which they had to research Pi and it’s significance in order to crack the codes to get into the box! When they finally cracked all of the codes, they were surprised to find Pi Day cookies made by Mrs. Meinholz and her mom in the breakout boxes! It was very fun to watch their enthusiasm and perseverance throughout the activity and the look of surprise and gratitude with their sweet rewards!
As part of the Kids Heart Challenge from the American Heart Association, the #VanguardPride elementary school students have been participating in "Jump Rope for Heart" activities during their gym classes all week. This years' motto is "Be the Torch".
Mr. Austin taught the kids about the challenge and set up stations around the gym so they could try different ways to jump rope! Forward, backward, one footed, etc. and then with Mr. Austin turning the rope for them!
What a fun and great way to get the kids moving, and to raise awareness for children's heart health! 💖
